From Research to Realization: Union Budget 2025 Transforming deep tech and AI and startups

New Delhi: The Union Budget 2025 has unveiled a bold roadmap for India’s startup ecosystem, deep tech sector, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. With a strong push for innovation, private sector collaboration, and digital infrastructure, the government has reaffirmed its vision to position India as a global technology powerhouse.

A key highlight is the ₹20,000 crore investment to boost private sector-led research and innovation, along with the establishment of a Deep Tech Fund. This initiative aims to accelerate advancements in critical sectors, including space technology. Additionally, the PM Research Fellowship Scheme, offering 10,000 fellowships over five years, is set to nurture the next generation of scientific talent.

“The Deep Tech Fund and research investments mark a pivotal moment for India’s space sector,” said Dr. Subba Rao Pavuluri, President, SIA-India. “The establishment of Centres of Excellence in AI further cements India’s leadership in deep tech and scientific research, fostering collaboration between academia, startups, and the private sector.”

Recognizing AI’s transformative potential, the budget also proposes multiple Centres of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence to drive research, skill development, and industry partnerships. These hubs will advance AI applications in defence, healthcare, agriculture, and space technology, strengthening India’s position in the global AI race.

The BharatNet initiative will expand broadband connectivity to rural schools and health centres, leveraging satellite communications to bridge the digital divide. Mr. Anil Prakash, Director General, SIA-India, welcomed the move, stating, “Satellite technology will play a crucial role in ensuring digital access for underserved regions. The National Geospatial Mission, aligned with PM Gati Shakti, will further enhance India’s geospatial capabilities for infrastructure and disaster management.”

To bolster startups and MSMEs, the government has allocated an additional ₹10,000 crore and introduced an export promotion mission to streamline credit access and support global trade expansion. Further, a Startup India Innovation Challenge will offer competitive grants to deep tech, space tech, and AI-driven ventures.

The Union Budget 2025 signals a forward-looking strategy to cement India’s leadership in next-generation technologies. With strong public-private partnerships, targeted investments, and a renewed focus on digital inclusivity, India is poised to drive the next wave of global technological transformation.
