Stadium named after cricketer Richa Ghosh to come up in north Bengal’s Siliguri: Mamata

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said a stadium will come up in Siliguri, named after World Cup-winning cricketer Richa Ghosh.

Siliguri in north Bengal is the hometown of Ghosh, the 22-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, who played a major role in the women’s World Cup triumph.

“The ‘Richa Cricket Stadium’ will be built on a 27-acre plot at the Chandmani Tea Estate. This is a way to honour Richa, one of Bengal’s shining sports talents, and also encourage more young cricketers from north Bengal,” Banerjee told reporters in Siliguri.

Ghosh became the first Bengali to win a Cricket World Cup as the women’s team lifted the title in Navi Mumbai recently. The wicketkeeper-batter played a crucial part for team India and has since been felicitated across the state.

Richa was felicitated by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and the West Bengal government following her outstanding performance in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. She was appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in West Bengal, and the felicitation ceremony took place at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on November 8, 2025, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally handed over the appointment letter.

Richa received the prestigious Banga Bhushan award from the state government, a gold chain as a gift from the Chief Minister, and a cash reward of Rs 34 lakh from CAB, which corresponded to her 34-run knock in the World Cup final against South Africa. She was also presented with a golden bat and ball by CAB as a tribute to her contributions during the tournament.

In the 2025 World Cup, Richa Ghosh played a vital role in India’s title-winning campaign, scoring 235 runs in eight matches at an average of 39.16 and a strike rate of 133.52.
