Mirzapur (UP): Renowned classical vocalist and Padma Vibhushan Pandit Chhannulal Mishra died early Thursday. He was 89.
Family sources said Mishra breathed his last around 4 am after a prolonged illness.
The vocalist had been living in Mirzapur with his youngest daughter’s family for some time.
The last rites of Pandit Chhannulal Mishra will be performed in Varanasi at 5 pm.
Veteran singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was a classical singer from Banaras who was a representative of the Banaras gharana (school) of Hindustani classical music, particularly the Khayal and the ‘Purab Ang’ – Thumri.
He had received multiple awards and accolades throughout his career. He has received the ‘Shiromani Award’ from Sur Singar Sansad, Bombay; the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award; and the Government of India’s Sangeet Natak Academy fellowship.
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra had sung several classical songs. He had also sung the Aarakshan (2011) song Kaun Si Dor with Shreya Ghoshal and Saans Albeli. The film stars Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan, and Amitabh Bachchan in the lead roles. He had also sung the title track of Sunny Deol’s 2018 drama satire, Mohalla Assi.
The veteran singer had also received India’s third-highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan. In 2020, he received India’s second-highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan.
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra is survived by his son, tabla player Ramkumar Mishra, and three daughters.
