Public Funds for Rahul’s PR? BJP Slams Cong Govt

Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Telangana unit on Tuesday came down heavily on the Congress-led state government headed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for allegedly squandering public funds on what it termed a “glorified party-sponsored spectacle” — the recently held Bharat Summit. The BJP accused the government of misappropriating crores from state corporations to organise the high-profile two-day summit aimed at propping up Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s global image, rather than serving the developmental needs of Telangana.

BJP Telangana Chief Spokesperson and Media In-Charge Subash strongly criticised the government’s financial priorities. “At a time when the state is struggling to pay pensions and meet basic welfare obligations, the Chief Minister dares to blow nearly Rs 30 crore on a pompous event designed purely to stroke the ego of his party’s dynast. If this isn’t a gross misuse of public money, what is?” he asked.

The theme of the summit, notably, was not aligned with Telangana’s core developmental needs or industrial goals but rather focused on “Delivering Global Justice” — a vague and lofty slogan better suited to international conferences than a state-funded event.

The BJP revealed that this summit was not funded through private sponsors or central assistance but was bankrolled directly by state government entities. Citing a Right to Information (RTI) reply obtained by activist Kareem Ansari alias Yugantar, the BJP spokesperson pointed out that the Telangana Trade Promotion Corporation (TGTPC) released a staggering Rs 29.45 crore for the summit. This disbursement was made under Government Orders Ms No. 65 dated 24.03.2025 and Ms No. 69 dated 08.04.2025, based on instructions from a Special Chief Secretary-level officer who also serves as Commissioner for Industrial Promotion.

“What business does the Trade Promotion Corporation have in funding an ideological event unrelated to trade or industry?” Subash questioned. “This is a brazen diversion of taxpayer money for political vanity.”
The BJP further noted that the TGTPC’s mandate is to facilitate trade fairs, promote exports, and support MSMEs — none of which were featured in the summit’s agenda. “Instead, the Congress government hosted an ideological jamboree to propagate Rahul Gandhi’s fantasy of a ‘just world order,’ using Telangana’s funds as the piggy bank,” Subash said.

The BJP demanded that the Chief Minister issue a public apology for what it described as a betrayal of public trust. “It is shameful that while senior citizens, pensioners, and thousands of scheme beneficiaries await dues for four months, this government prioritised a stage-managed summit that served no purpose other than political self-promotion,” he added.

The party also demanded a full audit of the expenditure incurred for the event, identification of officials responsible for the fund diversion, and immediate reimbursement of the amount back to the TGTPC and other affected government entities.

“The Congress government is running a circus with empty coffers. This Bharat Summit was less about ‘global justice’ and more about political injustice to the people of Telangana,” Subash concluded.
