According to the South Indian calendar, Maha Shivratri falls on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha. In the North Indian calendar, it is observed in the month of Phalguna. Despite the different month names, both traditions celebrate Maha Shivratri on the same day. This year, it falls on Wednesday, February 26.
Maha Shivratri is a time for devotion, meditation, and strengthening spiritual connections. Across India, several places offer unique and immersive celebrations. Here are some of the most magical destinations to experience this festival:
Varanasi
Also known as Kashi, Varanasi is a major Shaivite center and one of the world’s oldest living cities. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the focal point, where lakhs of pilgrims queue for hours to offer prayers. The mesmerizing Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, along with devotional chants and bhajans, fills the city with divine energy.
Devotees perform Rudrabhishekam at the temple by offering milk, honey, and bael leaves. The Shiv Baraat, a vibrant procession featuring people dressed as Shiva, Parvati, and other deities, adds to the festivities. The night is spent in meditation, singing, and soaking in the spiritual aura.
Somnath
The Somnath Temple in Gujarat, believed to house the first Jyotirlinga on Earth, hosts grand Maha Shivratri celebrations. Thousands of devotees gather for Maha Rudrabhishekam and special rituals.
A highlight is the laser light and sound show, narrating the temple’s history. Before entering the shrine, devotees traditionally take a holy dip in the Arabian Sea.
Ujjain
Home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Ujjain is another sacred destination. The temple hosts the famous Bhasma Aarti at 4 AM, where the Shivalinga is bathed in sacred ash. Devotees engage in meditation and chanting throughout the night, while the city is adorned with flowers and lights, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

Situated on the banks of the sacred Ganga, Haridwar, and Rishikesh celebrate Maha Shivratri with great devotion. The Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, located near Rishikesh, is a major pilgrimage site.
Devotees also visit Har Ki Pauri, Daksheshwar Mahadev, and other temples, taking a holy dip in the Ganga. All-night bhajans, kirtans, and the Ganga Aarti create a deeply immersive spiritual atmosphere.
Srikalahasti
The Srikalahasti Temple in Andhra Pradesh is famous for its Vayu Lingam (Wind Linga) and is considered self-manifested.
