Justice M Sundar new chief justice of Manipur HC

New Delhi: Justice M Sundar of the Madras High Court has been elevated as the chief justice of the Manipur High Court, the law ministry said on Sunday.

In a statement, the ministry said Justice Sundar will assume charge following the retirement of incumbent Chief Justice Kempaiah Somashekar on Sunday.

High court judges demit office on attaining the age of 62 years, while Supreme Court judges retire at 65.

Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal made the announcement.

“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice M. Sundar, Judge, Madras High Court as Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur with effect from the date he assumes charge of the office,” Mr. Meghwal said in a post on X.

The appointment follows the retirement of Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, the present Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur on September 14, 2025.

On September 11, the Supreme Court collegium had recommended Justice Sundar for the post.
