Union ministers Shivraj Chouhan, Kiren Rijiju visit flood-hit Assam; offer Centre’s full support

Guwahati: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday said the Centre will extend all possible assistance for relief and rehabilitation of people affected by floods in Assam.

Chouhan, along with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, visited several flood-affected areas in Dhemaji district and reviewed the situation with Assam ministers and senior state government officials.

Addressing the media after the inspection, Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the area had witnessed widespread devastation, with the river changing its course and destroying houses, household property, standing crops, and electricity infrastructure. He said the scale of the crisis is immense and severe.
The Minister stated that the administration is currently focused on immediate relief measures, including restoring connectivity, ensuring the supply of safe drinking water, and deploying medicines to prevent disease outbreaks. He added that long-term measures, such as clearing heavy silt and debris to facilitate the resumption of farming activities and rebuilding damaged houses, will be initiated immediately after a comprehensive damage assessment.
He assured that the Central Government would extend full support to the State Government and the affected people. The Minister further emphasized that the Government is committed to formulating a comprehensive long-term strategy to address the recurring flood problem in the region.
The high-level Central delegation was accompanied by Assam’s Minister for Panchayat and Rural Development, Atul Bora, State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, Member of Parliament Pradan Baruah, and Jonai MLA Bhuban Pegu.
