Holi celebrated at Sambhal’s Kartikeya Mahadev, a first in 46 years

Sambhal (UP): Amid tight security, devotees on Thursday celebrated Holi at Kartikeya Mahadev in Khaggu Sarai for the first time in 46 years.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from social and Hindu organizations at the temple, which was reopened last December after it was shut following riots in 1978.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shreesh Chandra said ample police forces have been deployed to ensure a smooth celebration.

Notably, the temple was reopened last year on December 13 after it was closed following riots in 1978. High security was also in place as people celebrated the festival.

Sharing their experience, participants thanked the officials for maintaining security and ensuring a smooth celebration. “The police have done a great job in maintaining security, and everyone is immersed in the festive spirit,” said Priyanshu Jain, a devotee who was a part of the Holi celebration at Kartikeya Mahadev.

Meanwhile, speaking about the security arrangements, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shreesh Chandra said ample police forces have been deployed to ensure a smooth celebration.

“Holi is being celebrated peacefully at the Kartikeya Mahadev Temple in Khaggu Sarai. There is no need for anyone to worry. People are enjoying the festival in a secure environment,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.

A small clip shared by IANS showed devotees at Kartikeya Mahadev temple celebrating the festival with all joy and enthusiasm.

The temple, also referred to as Bhasma Shankar temple, is located close to Shahi Jama Masjid, a place that witnessed communal violence on November 24, 2024, that claimed four lives.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) district president Anand Agrawal also expressed happiness on the occasion, calling it a “fortune”.

“After 46 years, we have had the fortune of playing Holi at the Kartikeya Mahadev Temple. People from various social organisations have gathered here, celebrating (Holi) with flowers and colours,” he said.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Police is on high alert ahead of the Holi celebrations across the state. Surveillance drones have been put in place, CCTV cameras have been installed at communal sensitive areas as ‘jumma’ namaaz and Holi falls on the same day. The officials are keeping a close eye on security arrangements to ensure smooth celebration.
