Pandav Kalin Prachin Shiv Mandir a sacred and ancient temple is located in the spiritually vibrant Madipur village near West Punjabi Bagh in New Delhi.The temple is revered by locals as a powerful place of Lord Shiva’s presence, and devotees visit with deep faith seeking blessings, peace, and spiritual strength.
The temple is traditionally believed to belong to the Pandava period of the Mahabharata. Local belief considers the site to be around 5000 years old. Though the current structure has been renovated multiple times, the sanctity of the location is considered extremely ancient. Devotees strongly believe that the place itself is sacred and has been continuously worshipped for generations.
The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a sacred Shivling placed inside the sanctum. Devotees offer water, milk, and bilva leaves to the Shivling. A Nandi idol is placed facing Lord Shiva. Small shrines of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Hanuman are also present inside the temple premises. Regular abhishekam and puja are performed by devotees and priests.
The temple follows simple North Indian style architecture. The structure consists of a small entrance, a mandap area for devotees, and the sanctum housing the Shivling. The Shivling is placed at ground level so that devotees can perform direct worship. The temple does not have elaborate carvings but carries a strong spiritual aura. The Nandi idol facing the sanctum and additional small shrines add to the devotional atmosphere.
According to local traditions, the Madipur area was once covered with forests in ancient times. During their exile, the Pandavas are believed to have travelled through this region. They discovered the sacred spot and worshipped Lord Shiva here. Over time, villagers recognized the spiritual importance of the place and built a temple structure around the sacred Shivling. The temple has remained a center of devotion ever since.
As per the temple legend, during the exile period described in the Mahabharata, the Pandavas reached the Madipur region while travelling across northern India. They found a naturally existing Shivling at this location and performed intense prayers seeking strength and protection. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Shiva is believed to have blessed them with courage and success in their future battles. After receiving divine blessings, the Pandavas continued their journey, and the sacred Shivling remained at the site. Later, devotees constructed a temple around it. Even today, devotees believe that prayers offered here bring strength, remove obstacles, and fulfill wishes.
Maha Shivaratri is the most important festival celebrated in the temple, when large numbers of devotees visit and perform special abhishekam throughout the night. The Shravan month also sees heavy footfall with special pujas conducted on all Mondays. Pradosham days are observed regularly with Shiva worship. Nag Panchami and all Mondays of the year are considered highly auspicious. During these occasions, the temple atmosphere becomes vibrant with devotional activities and continuous prayers.
