Shri Govardhan Nathji temple is located in the Bhagal area of Surat, Gujarat. Bhagal is one of the oldest parts of the city and has historically been a centre for Vaishnav devotees.
Shri Govardhan Nathji Temple is believed to be nearly 400 years old. It is considered one of the oldest Vaishnav temples in Surat and holds great historical and spiritual significance for followers of the Pushtimarg tradition.
The presiding deity is Shri Govardhan Nathji, a divine form of Lord Krishna depicted lifting Govardhan Hill. This form represents Krishna protecting the people of Vraj from heavy rains sent by Indra. The deity is worshipped as Thakorji in the Pushtimarg tradition, where the Lord is treated as a living divine child and served with daily offerings, music, and devotional seva.
The temple follows the traditional Haveli-style architecture of Pushtimarg shrines. The structure resembles a royal mansion rather than a conventional temple, symbolizing Krishna’s residence. The complex includes darshan halls, an inner sanctum, and spaces for preparing bhog offerings. The layout reflects the concept of serving the Lord as the head of a divine household.
The temple was established nearly four centuries ago in the Bhagal locality of Surat. It became an important centre for Vaishnav devotees and is popularly known as “Pare Bektaji”. The shrine is considered the fifth most important Vaishnav temple after those in Vraj. The temple is also believed to be mentioned in ancient Vaishnav scriptures, highlighting its historical and religious importance.

According to the Vaishnav tradition, this sacred place is believed to be the spot where Shri Govardhan Nathji himself arrived and manifested his divine presence. Because of this belief, the temple came to be known as Pare Bethakji, meaning the place where the Lord rested. Such Bethak sites are considered highly sacred in the Pushtimarg tradition.
It is believed that four such sacred places are located in the Vraj region, and this temple in Surat is considered the fifth. Due to this connection, devotees regard the temple as spiritually linked to Vraj and Govardhan Hill. Worshipping here is believed to give spiritual merit similar to visiting Vraj, and devotees visit to seek blessings for protection and prosperity.
