Shri Bagetil Ganapati Temple is one of the traditionally revered Ganapati shrines of the Sangli region in Maharashtra. The sacred idol of Shri Bagetil Ganapati was installed in the year 1834 by Shri Chintaman Rao Patwardhan of the Royal Patwardhan Family of Sangli. The Patwardhans, who were known for their devotion and patronage of temples and dharmic traditions, established this Ganapati shrine as a spiritually significant place for the welfare of the people and the region.
With a history of nearly two centuries, the temple has remained an important centre of devotion for devotees from Sangli, Haripur, and nearby villages. Over generations, the temple has preserved its sacred traditions, simple devotional atmosphere, and strong connection with the local community.
The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shri Ganesha, worshipped here as “Bagetil Ganapati.” The name “Bagetil” comes from the Marathi word Baget, meaning garden, orchard, or cultivated land. Traditionally, the temple area was surrounded by orchards and fertile greenery, giving the deity this affectionate and locally significant name.
Devotees believe that Shri Bagetil Ganapati is highly compassionate and responsive to sincere prayers. The deity is worshipped for success in new beginnings, family harmony, education, health, business growth, and removal of obstacles. Many devotees visit the temple before starting auspicious activities such as marriages, house construction, examinations, and new ventures.

Though associated with the Sangli royal family, the shrine maintains a humble and spiritually serene appearance rather than grand royal ornamentation. According to local temple tradition and oral history preserved in the Haripur and Sangli region, the area around the temple was once covered with fertile orchards, gardens, and cultivated fields. During the early nineteenth century, the people of the region often prayed for protection from natural difficulties, crop failures, and hardships affecting village life.
It is believed that Shri Chintaman Rao Patwardhan, the ruler from the Sangli royal family and a great devotee of Lord Ganesha, felt spiritually inspired to establish a sacred Ganapati shrine in this peaceful garden region near Haripur. During his visits to the area, the serene surroundings and spiritual vibrations of the land deeply attracted him.
Following divine inspiration and traditional rituals, the sacred idol of Lord Ganesha was ceremoniously installed in 1834 amidst the greenery and orchards of the region. From that time onward, the deity came to be lovingly known as “Bagetil Ganapati” — the Ganapati residing in the gardens.
Local devotees soon began experiencing the divine grace of the deity. Farmers prayed for rainfall and agricultural prosperity, students sought success in education, and families prayed for peace and well-being. Over the years, many devotees shared experiences of fulfilled prayers and removal of obstacles after worshipping Shri Bagetil Ganapati with devotion.
Even today, devotees believe that the divine presence of Bagetil Ganapati protects the region and blesses sincere worshippers with prosperity, wisdom, and spiritual peace.
Ganesh Chaturthi is the major festival celebrated at the temple with special poojas, aartis, and devotional gatherings. Sankashti Chaturthi also attracts many devotees who visit the temple to seek Lord Ganesha’s blessings for the removal of obstacles and fulfillment of wishes. Daily poojas and traditional rituals continue to preserve the temple’s sacred spiritual heritage.
