Shree Benne Mahaganapati Temple is located in the small village of Kaikatgeri near Honnavar in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. The exact age of the temple is not clearly documented through inscriptions or historical records. However, local traditions indicate that the temple has existed for many generations and is believed to be several centuries old.
The presiding deity of the temple is *Lord Mahaganapati*, a powerful form of Lord Ganesha, worshipped as the remover of obstacles and the giver of wisdom and prosperity.
Mahaganapati is worshipped here as *Benne Mahaganapati. In the Kannada language, the word *Benne* means *butter*. The deity was named for the sacred idol’s naturally smooth, rounded appearance, which resembles soft butter.
Unlike many Ganapati temples where idols are clearly sculpted with detailed ornaments and features, the idol here is believed to have a naturally formed, rounded shape. Devotees worship this unique form with deep faith, believing that prayers to Lord Benne Mahaganapati help remove obstacles and bring success and prosperity.

The temple reflects the simple traditional architectural style commonly seen in village temples of coastal Karnataka. The temple consists mainly of a sanctum housing the idol of Mahaganapati and a small hall where devotees gather for prayer and worship. The structure is modest but spiritually vibrant, reflecting the devotional traditions of the local community. Over time the temple has undergone renovations and improvements by local devotees and temple authorities. Because of these renovations, the temple today shows a blend of older structural elements and newer additions.
The Benne Mahaganapati Temple has long been an important place of worship for the people living in Kaikatgeri and nearby villages. Over time the temple developed as villagers and devotees continued to maintain the shrine and perform regular worship.
The temple gradually gained popularity among devotees in the Honnavar region, and many pilgrims traveling along the coastal belt of Uttara Kannada visit it to seek the blessings of Lord Mahaganapati before embarking on important journeys or activities.
According to local temple tradition, the idol of Benne Mahaganapati is believed to be *Swayambhu*, meaning a naturally manifested form of Lord Ganesha.
It is believed that many years ago villagers noticed a unique natural formation at this spot that resembled the form of Lord Ganesha. Considering it to be a divine manifestation, they began worshipping it with great devotion.
The sacred form appeared smooth, rounded, and butter-like in appearance. Because of this distinctive shape, devotees began referring to the deity as *Benne Mahaganapati*, and over time a temple structure was constructed around the sacred idol so that regular poojas and worship could be performed.
Devotees believe that Lord Benne Mahaganapati quickly responds to sincere prayers and helps remove obstacles from the lives of devotees.
Ganesh Chaturthi is the most important festival celebrated in the temple. During this time the temple is beautifully decorated and special poojas, abhishekam, and devotional programs are conducted. Many devotees visit the temple during this festival to receive the blessings of Lord Mahaganapati.
Special poojas are performed every month on Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees observe fasting and visit the temple on this day seeking relief from obstacles and problems.
