Sri Vishwakarma Temple is located in the Kydganj locality of Prayagraj, a historic and sacred city in Uttar Pradesh. The temple lies not far from the holy confluence known as Triveni Sangam, where the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati are believed to meet. The temple is situated in a traditional neighborhood where many families belonging to the Vishwakarma artisan community live, making it an important spiritual center for craftsmen, mechanics, engineers, and workers who worship Lord Vishwakarma as their divine patron.
The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Vishwakarma, who is revered in Hindu tradition as the divine architect and celestial craftsman of the universe. According to the Puranas, Vishwakarma was born to the Vasu named Prabhasa and Yogasiddha, who was the sister of the divine guru Brihaspati. Because of his divine wisdom and creative power, he became the builder of magnificent celestial structures for the gods. Scriptures describe him as the creator of the golden city of Lanka, originally built for Kubera, the heavenly palace of Indra, and the beautiful city of Dwarka for Krishna. He is also believed to have crafted divine weapons such as the Sudarshana Chakra and the Vajra. In the temple, the idol usually depicts Lord Vishwakarma seated majestically with multiple arms holding tools like a hammer, chisel, measuring scale, and scriptures, symbolizing knowledge, planning, skill, and creativity.
The temple is built in a simple traditional North Indian style and reflects the devotion of the local artisan community rather than elaborate royal architecture. The structure includes a sanctum where the idol of Lord Vishwakarma is installed and a small prayer hall where devotees gather for worship. The entrance and interior walls are decorated with religious symbols and images associated with craftsmanship and divine creation. Though modest in size, the temple has a peaceful and spiritually vibrant atmosphere.

The history of the temple is closely connected with the Vishwakarma artisan families living in Kydganj for many generations. These craftsmen, including carpenters, blacksmiths, sculptors, and mechanics, built the temple so that they could collectively worship their divine master before beginning their work. Over time the temple became a spiritual and cultural center for the community. Even today many devotees visit the temple before starting new construction work, purchasing tools, or opening workshops to seek divine blessings for success and safety.
According to a traditional belief shared among local devotees, many decades ago a group of hardworking artisans lived in the Kydganj area and worked in carpentry, metalwork, and construction. Although they were skilled craftsmen, they often faced difficulties such as broken tools, work accidents, and financial struggles. One night an elderly carpenter from the community had a vivid dream in which a radiant divine figure appeared surrounded by glowing tools and architectural designs. The divine being revealed himself as Lord Vishwakarma and told the devotee that wherever people work with dedication and creativity, his divine presence exists. He instructed the craftsmen to establish a shrine in his honor and worship him with devotion so that their work would prosper. Inspired by this vision, the artisans came together and built a small temple dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma at Kydganj. Devotees believe that after the temple was established, the craftsmen of the area began to experience improvement in their work, prosperity in their livelihood, and protection from accidents.
The main festival celebrated here is Vishwakarma Jayanti, when artisans and workers worship their tools and machines and offer special prayers. Festivals like Diwali and Navaratri are also observed with simple devotional rituals.
