The sage Gouthama, born of the lineage of Rahugana, raises his contemplative voice in measured cadence through the Jagatī, Triṣṭubh, and Uṣṇik metres of the Rigveda, directing his prayer to the luminous goddess Ushas and the divine twin horsemen, the Ashvins. His hymn unfolds as both poetic revelation and subtle observation of cosmic order, where the dawn is not merely a daily occurrence but a profound manifestation of truth, rhythm, and awakening.
Ushas, the radiant daughter of the shining expanse, spreads her light across the vastness of space. Before her emergence, the firmament itself seems to prepare the path for the sun, as though the universe anticipates illumination. Her rays, sharp and pure like a finely honed weapon, pierce through the lingering veil of darkness, purifying the world. These rays arise self-born, needing no external force, and the first beam ascends like a sovereign upon a celestial chariot. With her arrival, wisdom too awakens in human hearts, gradually refining itself into clarity and purity, much like her own transition into a resplendent white brilliance.
She serves the solar lord, Surya, as both herald and companion, preparing the world for his full radiance. Those who perform sacred rites with sincerity, purifying the Soma essence, are rewarded with abundance, for Ushas blesses the devoted through the agency of generous patrons. Like valiant warriors proclaiming their might across realms, her rays extend from east to west, announcing the triumph of light over obscurity. In her gentle yet firm action, she removes darkness as a barber shaves away hair, and like a cow yielding milk, she releases the hidden light concealed within the folds of night.
As a cow returns to her herd, Ushas faithfully appears in the eastern horizon and spreads her brilliance across all directions. Her first appearance marks the renewal of time itself, washing away the residue of darkness. Like a sacrificial post anointed with clarified butter, she saturates the world with light, sanctifying every space. Emerging from the edge of night, she scatters shadows and distributes insight among people, causing joy that is spontaneous and unrestrained, like the laughter of one uplifted from poverty to abundance. Ever radiant, she is a lover of truth, eternally renewing herself while remaining ancient in essence.
The sages of the Gautama lineage revere her as the sustainer of life and order. They seek from her not only material prosperity—children, grandchildren, cattle, horses, and wealth—but also continuity of lineage and stability of society. Ushas grants noble offspring and thriving households, rewarding those who honor her with offerings. She illuminates all realms, expanding her light westward while nurturing the growth of life. Her presence inspires movement, effort, and appreciation among people, who greet her with reverence and gratitude.
Yet within her beauty lies a subtle reminder of mortality. Though eternal and ever-renewing, each dawn diminishes the span of human life. Like a hunter who gradually claims the lives of birds, Ushas silently reduces the longevity of mortals, marking the passage of time. At the edge of the sky, she dispels darkness while the night retreats, yielding its place. Thus, her arrival is both a blessing and a measure, a balance between creation and dissolution.
As the consort of Surya, she flourishes in radiant harmony, guiding the rhythms of life. Just as shepherds release their cattle into open pastures, Ushas releases her light across the world. Mature and abundant, she flows like life-giving waters, illuminating existence and setting into motion the daily cycle of activity. Rituals align with her rays, for she is the initiator of sacred action, the moment when offerings begin and intentions take form.
Endowed with the essence of sacrifice, she is herself like a sacred offering, nourishing the cosmos. She dispels darkness so that the first rites of the day may be conducted, and she arrives with her red-hued horses yoked to her chariot, bringing fortune to those who invoke her. Her light is truth-bearing, her presence a call to righteous action, and her blessings sustain generations.
