Kannaru Durgaparameshwari Temple

Kannaru Durgaparameshwari Temple is located in the peaceful village of Cherkady, in Udupi district, Karnataka. The presiding deity of this temple is Sri Durgaparameshwari, a powerful form of Goddess Durga. She is revered as the Gramadevata (village goddess) who protects the land and people from evil and brings prosperity. The deity is believed to be very powerful and benevolent, responding to sincere prayers with blessings.

The temple showcases a simple yet traditional South Canara-style architecture. The main sanctum (garbhagriha) houses the idol of Durgaparameshwari, adorned with flowers, jewelry, and a trident. The temple structure includes a mukhamantapa (entrance hall) and a pradakshina patha (circumambulatory path). Although modest in scale, the temple’s calm and sacred environment makes it spiritually vibrant.

Kannaru Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple is rooted in the ancient belief that Goddess Durga Parameshwari herself chose this serene spot in Kannaru village, Cherkady, to reside and protect the land and its people.

Long ago, the region around Cherkady was dense with forests and wild terrain, and the local villagers were troubled by negative forces and unknown fears. The area was believed to be disturbed by asuric (demonic) energies that caused distress to the people and livestock. The elders and sages of the land prayed to the Divine Mother for protection.

Moved by their devotion, Goddess Durga Parameshwari appeared in a powerful form, wielding weapons and riding her lion. She vanquished the evil forces and restored peace to the land. Her divine presence brought calm, prosperity, and spiritual energy to the village. It is said that the Goddess manifested herself in a self-chosen location (Swayambhu Sthala), where the temple now stands.

To honor her divine presence and protection, the villagers built a small shrine at the exact place of manifestation. Over time, this shrine evolved into the present temple, and the goddess came to be worshipped as “Kannaru Durgaparameshwari”, the fierce yet benevolent protector of the village.

Since then, generations of devotees have continued to worship her as their Gramadevata (village guardian deity). It is believed that she watches over every household in Kannaru and surrounding areas, and those who surrender to her with faith are blessed with health, victory over obstacles, and inner strength.

Even today, people offer prayers before starting any major task—a wedding, a new home, or a business venture—believing that Amma (the Mother Goddess) will guide and protect them on the right path.

Navaratri is the main festival celebrated at Kannaru Durgaparameshwari Temple, a nine-day festival in honor of Goddess Durga. The temple is decorated with lamps, flowers, and colorful rangolis during this time. Special poojas, homas, and cultural programs are organized, drawing devotees from nearby villages. The annual Jatre (village fair) is also held, which includes a procession of the deity
