Is the WB govt culpable in Abhaya’s ‘rape-murder’?

The cremation of Abhaya’s body was rushed under intense pressure, so much so that it occurred before her mother could even reach the crematorium. Over ten days have passed, and the CBI continues to interrogate the sole suspect in the alleged gang rape of this young doctor, shockingly doing so within the confines of RG Kar Hospital. Crematorium staff, when questioned by TV reporters, admitted that they received last-minute instructions to carry out the cremation. One staff member mentioned that it was highly unusual to perform a cremation after 8 PM, yet the body was brought in late at night. The post-mortem, too, was reportedly conducted at breakneck speed, disregarding the typical thorough procedures expected in such controversial cases. Allegations have surfaced that hospital authorities, in collusion with the police, attempted to destroy evidence. Although the post-mortem report claimed there were no injuries on her body, it shockingly revealed the presence of some fluids in her abdomen – a volume that medical experts argue could not have come from a single individual. Why would a responsible government reveal such disturbing details publicly unless they were attempting to cover something up? The post-mortem further disclosed that Abhaya was strangled to death, suggesting the involvement of more than one person with 150 mg of fluids. The report painted a horrifying picture of the unimaginable torture and pain she endured in her final moments. Abhaya’s mother recounted the anguish of being denied the chance to see her daughter when she arrived at the hospital. “I fell at their feet, begging them to let me see my daughter. But they refused. No one understands what I went through. They only let us see her at 2 PM,” she said. In the early hours of August 9, the body of the 31-year-old trainee doctor was found in a semi-naked state in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The autopsy revealed that she had been raped before being murdered, with her neck broken and multiple injuries, including severe bleeding from her private parts. The Supreme Court, having taken up the case suo moto, is set to hear it tomorrow. There is hope that the Court will take all these details into account and deliver a justice so profound that it holds the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government accountable, potentially even leading to its dismissal for allowing such a heinous crime and the subsequent cover-up to occur.  This because, she was also holding the key Home portfolio. The people across the country keep their fingers crossed as only an impactful verdict helps prevent the recurrence of such heinous crimes making the governments responsible accountable.
