India thrash Japan 5-1 in Asian Hockey Championship final

Hangzhou: The Indian men’s hockey team continued their commanding show at the Asian Games and finished the campaign with a five star performance. Leading the side from front, Harmanpreet, arguably the world’s best drag flicker at the moment, scored twice as India beat Japan 5-1 to win the gold medal.

The proceedings kicked-off with Japan displaying watertight defence and didn’t allow India to create any real chance until the final minute of the first quarter. India were then awarded a penalty corner, which was easily dealt by Japan. Manpreet Singh, the man who had led India to a historic bronze in Tokyo, broke the deadlock in the 25th minute with a powerful reverse flick.

Harmanpreet then joined the scoresheet as India extended their lead to 2-0 two minutes into the third quarter. Four minutes later Amit Rohidas made it 3-0 converting from a penalty corner.

Abhishek then added a fourth goal early in the fourth and final quarter and Harmanpreet wrapped the show with his second strike with a minute remaining for the final hooter.
