Kathmandu: At least nine climbers, including two Nepalese guides, have been killed in two separate avalanches in Nepal, officials said on Tuesday.
Seven climbers were buried in an avalanche near Mt. Yalung Ri (6,920m) under Gaurishanker Rural Municipality at around 10 am on Monday while attempting to scale the peak, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Gyan Kumar Mahato.
A joint rescue mission has been mobilised to retrieve the bodies of the seven climbers, he said.
Following heavy snowstorms, the deaths occurred in two separate incidents since Friday. An avalanche hit a group of 12 people at the base camp of 5,630-metre (18,471-foot) Yalung Ri peak, in central Nepal, near the border with China on Monday.
The weather conditions have been deteriorating in Nepal since last week, which resulted in the avalanche hitting a group of 12 people at the base camp of 5,630 metres (18,471 feet), in central Nepal, near the border with China.
Rescue and relief operations are underway with rescuers reaching the foot along with a helicopter which attempted to reach the site but had to return due to bad weather.
Seven people died in that disaster, including three Italians, two Nepalis, a German and a French climber, Phurba Tenjing Sherpa, from expedition organiser Dreamers Destination, told news agency AFP.
