Chennai: In an effort to position Hosur as a key industrial hub in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced on Thursday in the Assembly that a new international airport, covering over 2,000 acres, will be constructed in Hosur. This airport will have the capacity to handle 30 million passengers annually.
Announcing the project under Rule 110 of the Assembly, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of improving connectivity to support the numerous manufacturing and industrial units in and around Hosur, which have recently seen increased investments in electronics and electric vehicle manufacturing.
The State government has been implementing several forward-looking initiatives to bring modern infrastructure to Hosur, with a new Master Plan for the area nearing completion. The Chief Minister emphasized that an airport in Hosur is crucial for the socio-economic development of the Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri regions.
Industries Minister TRB Rajaa expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister, stating, “The new airport will foster a twin-city ecosystem with Bengaluru, driving growth in both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.” He added that the project will enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth, benefiting not only Hosur but also neighboring districts such as Dharmapuri and Salem, as well as parts of Bengaluru.
Rajaa, who has been advocating for an airport in Hosur since his tenure at the State Planning Commission, thanked Chief Minister Stalin for making this vision a reality. He noted that an airport would significantly boost Hosur’s economy, given its strategic proximity to Bengaluru and Chennai and its thriving manufacturing ecosystem.
According to a release from Rajaa’s office, Hosur already has excellent connectivity to EXIM gateways and is close to other major business hubs and industrial clusters, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Sriperumbudur, and Coimbatore. The region has become a center for auto and EV manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, logistics, and electronics, and is developing into an IT hub with a planned IT park.
Dr. Jeyaranjan, Vice Chairperson of the State Planning Commission, stated, “The establishment of an airport in Hosur will be a game-changer for the region, significantly boosting our infrastructure and economic landscape. The airport will enhance connectivity and attract further investments, solidifying Hosur’s position as a major industrial and economic hub.”
Two years ago, the industries department’s policy note indicated the government’s intent to develop an airport in the region, considering industrial and economic growth, tourism, and other factors in northwest Tamil Nadu.
Currently, Hosur has only the Taneja aerodrome, which is owned by Pune-based Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Limited (TAAL).
