Shree Ghanteshwar Hanuman Temple is an ancient temple, with a self-manifested (swayambhu) idol of Lord Hanuman is located in Khar West, Mumbai.This famous Hanuman temple is known for its 100,000 bells, which devotees tie as offerings upon the fulfillment of their wishes. The temple is managed by the Shree Ghanteshwar Hanuman Jayanti Utsav Mandal.
Any devotee who enters the temple is thrilled by the sight of the countless bells. Bells of all sizes, including smaller ones, can be seen throughout the temple complex. The atmosphere in the temple resonates with the decoration and sound of bells, along with the vibrant presence of Lord Hanuman.
Temple President, Mr. Gopinath Malap, along with the late Mr. Ramesh More and their friends, used to meet regularly at Madhu Park Garden in Khar West.
One night, Ramesh More dreamed of Lord Hanuman’s idol buried under a tree in the park. In the dream, the idol asked him to lift it from the ground and place it somewhere, saying, “I am pleased with you.” The next day, Ramesh shared this dream with his friends, and they all decided to check if the idol was there. To their surprise, they found the idol just as in the dream. Together, they placed the idol under the Peepal and Banyan trees and regularly worshiped it.
About a year later, they moved the idol to the edge of Madhu Park Garden, making it visible from the street, and built a small temple around it. They raised money together to build the temple. Since then, they have celebrated Hanuman Jayanti each year. On this day, they also worship the original spot in Madhu Park Garden where the idol was first discovered.
Originally, it was known simply as Shree Hanuman Temple. However, the divine play of the self-manifested Lord Hanuman soon led to countless brass bells being accumulated there. Devotees, upon having their wishes fulfilled, began offering brass bells. Therefore, it was decided to rename the temple as Shree Ghanteshwar Hanuman Temple.
Hanuman Jayanti, Ram Navami are the major festivals in Ghanteshwar Hanuman Temple. This festival is celebrated in a grand manner. Every Saturday and Tuesday a large number of devotees come to the temple for darshan.
