Shami becomes fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets

Dubai: Star pacer Mohammed Shami became the fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets during the ICC Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh here on Thursday.

Returning to international cricket after a long injury layoff, Shami grabbed three wickets to reach the milestone in his 104th match and better former India pacer Ajit Agarkar’s record of reaching the mark in 133 matches.

Jaker Ali, who made 68, was his 200th wicket.

Shami has picked up three wickets so far for the Rohit Sharma-led side. The third wicket in the second match of the Champions Trophy 2025 has helped Shami create history, as he has now become India’s most successful bowler in ICC white-ball tournaments.

Shami has dismissed a total of 72 batters for India in ICC tournaments (ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy). The 34-year-old fast bowler from Amroha has 55 wickets to his name in 18 ODI World Cup matches, 14 wickets in 14 T20 World Cup matches, and three wickets in one Champions Trophy match played so far.

Shami broke Zaheer Khan’s record of 71 wickets. During his playing days, the left-arm pacer picked up 44 wickets in 23 ODI World Cup matches, 15 wickets in nine Champions Trophy matches and 12 wickets in 12 T20 World Cup matches.

In the list of bowlers with the most wickets for India in ICC white-ball tournaments, Shami and Zaheer are followed by Jasprit Bumrah (68 wickets), Ravindra Jadeja (65 wickets), and Ravichandran Ashwin (59 wickets).

The overall record of taking most wickets in ICC white-ball tournaments is held by Australia’s Mitchell Starc. The left-arm pacer has 103 wickets to his name in 57 matches.

The third wicket of the India-Bangladesh match on Thursday has also helped Shami become the fastest Indian and second-fastest bowler overall in the world to take 200 wickets in ODIs.
