Nerakovil Sri Kala Devi Amman Temple is situated in Silarpatti village near M. Subbulapuram in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu, and it lies around 35–40 km from Madurai city. Nerakovil is a rare and unique temple dedicated to the power of Time (Neram). It is considered the only temple where Time is worshipped as the supreme force governing life.
Though exact historical records are unavailable, traditional belief places the temple’s age between 500 to 1000 years. Generations of villagers, travellers, and devotees from nearby districts have worshipped Kala Devi here, experiencing changes in destiny and relief from difficulties caused by unfavourable time periods. This ancient temple has grown into a well-known centre of worship for those seeking divine timing and blessings.
The presiding deity of the temple is Sri Kala Devi Amman, worshipped as the Goddess of Time (Neram / Kala). She is believed to govern everything related to time cycles, fate, zodiac signs, nakshatras, and the navagrahas. Devotees pray to Kala Devi to transform bad time into good time, remove delays, unblock destiny, and bring timely solutions in areas like marriage, education, finance, health, and career. Her divine grace is said to create the right moment for every important event in life.
The temple follows a traditional village-style architecture, simple yet filled with spiritual power. The entrance gopuram carries the temple’s core message—
“நேரமே உலகம்” (Time is the World).

A very unique feature is the night-only worship tradition, where the sanctum remains open only after sunset. In the darkness of night, the sanctum shines beautifully with rows of lamps lit by devotees, creating a powerful and peaceful vibration. The inner sanctum houses the idol of Sri Kala Devi Amman, beautifully decorated with flowers, turmeric, and deepam, while the mandapam is filled with the fragrance of ghee lamps.
Across India, there are temples for Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, Kali, Amman, Bhagavati, Bhairava, Karuppasami, Ayyanar, Yakshis, and hundreds of village deities. Each temple has a specific form of divine energy. But among all these temples, Nerakovil stands out as a temple where TIME itself is worshipped as God.
Ancient families and sages believed that even if one prays in the strongest temples, no result comes unless Time supports it. This truth is the foundation of Nerakovil. For centuries, those struggling with delays, misfortune, or planetary bad periods have visited this temple at night and received blessings that changed the direction of their life.

According to the Sthalapurana, sages once meditated in this region seeking a divine power who could help humanity overcome suffering caused by bad timing, destiny blocks, and unfavourable planetary positions. Their prayers were answered when Goddess Shakti appeared as Sri Kala Devi, the cosmic ruler of time.
She chose Silarpatti as her sacred home to guide devotees, remove obstructions caused by wrong time periods, and bring timely success. It is believed that Kala Devi has the power to reverse misfortune, turn delays into progress, clear karmic blocks, and ensure that blessings manifest at the right moment.
Because of this divine energy, the temple is called Nerakovil – The Temple of Time.
The temple is famous for its powerful night worship, where miracles are believed to occur rapidly. Devotees follow a special ritual for best results:
Walk 11 times clockwise around the sanctum. Walk 11 times anti-clockwise Light 11 ghee lamps Sit in silence and meditate for 11 minutes
This sacred “11-count ritual” is said to correct the time cycle, remove the effect of bad periods, and bring a fresh positive phase in one’s life. People facing long delays, bad luck, failures, marriage obstacles, business struggles, or navagraha doshas perform this ritual for immediate relief.
Important days such as Pournami (Full Moon) are celebrated with special lamp worship. Amavasai (New Moon) is considered strong for removing negative karma. Aadi Fridays, Navaratri, and Mahalaya Paksha attract large numbers of devotees. On these nights, the temple shines with hundreds of lamps, creating a spiritually powerful atmosphere that amplifies the blessings of Kala Devi.
