Who Insulted Dr Ambedkar – Cong or BJP?

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, remains one of the most revered figures in Indian history. His contributions as a jurist, economist, social reformer, and politician have left an indelible mark on India’s socio-political fabric.

Yet, debates surrounding his legacy are often marred by political narratives and accusations, particularly concerning allegations of who may have insulted or opposed him during his lifetime.

One such controversy involves the Congress party, which often claims to champion Ambedkar’s legacy but has faced accusations of sidelining him historically. This issue has resurfaced in the context of a recent verbal war between the Congress and the BJP during a debate on the Constitution in both Houses of Parliament, with the former demanding the resignation of Union Minister Amit Shah over comments perceived as disrespectful to Ambedkar.

Dr. Ambedkar’s relationship with the Indian National Congress was complex. While he shared a common goal with the Congress in seeking India’s independence, their approaches to achieving social justice were markedly different. Ambedkar’s unwavering commitment to the upliftment of Dalits often brought him into direct conflict with Congress leaders, who, despite advocating for equality, did not prioritize the abolition of caste-based discrimination to the same extent.

One of the key points of contention was the Poona Pact of 1932. Ambedkar had initially supported separate electorates for Dalits, arguing that this was essential to ensure their political representation. However, under immense pressure, including a fast-unto-death protest by Mahatma Gandhi, Ambedkar agreed to a compromise, which resulted in reserved seats for Dalits within the general electorate. While the Poona Pact is often hailed as a moment of unity, Ambedkar himself later expressed disillusionment, criticizing Gandhi and the Congress for failing to truly address caste inequities.

Post-independence, Ambedkar’s role as the chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution showcased his intellectual brilliance. However, his tenure in the Constituent Assembly was not without challenges. Despite being instrumental in shaping India’s foundational document, Ambedkar faced significant opposition within the Assembly, including from Congress members who resisted many of his progressive ideas. Notably, Ambedkar’s proposals for the Hindu Code Bill, aimed at reforming Hindu personal laws to grant greater rights to women, were met with fierce resistance. This opposition ultimately led to his resignation from the Nehru cabinet in 1951.

In contemporary politics, various parties seek to claim Ambedkar’s legacy, often by accusing rivals of disrespecting him. The Congress, despite its historical tensions with Ambedkar, now portrays itself as a staunch defender of his ideals. However, critics argue that this is a strategic shift rather than a reflection of genuine ideological alignment. For instance, during Ambedkar’s lifetime, key Congress leaders often undermined his vision for Dalit emancipation, prioritizing political expediency over social reform.

On the other hand, our party, the BJP, has indeed embraced Ambedkar’s legacy, as evidenced by ensuring a Dalit could ascend to the highest office in the country – the Presidency. Can anyone genuinely deny this fact?

The current controversy, fueled by the Congress’s demand for Union Minister Amit Shah’s resignation, reveals nothing short of hypocrisy. Shah’s comments were misinterpreted by the Congress as an insult to Ambedkar, seemingly as a tactic to divert attention from their own historical shortcomings.

To truly honour Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy, it is imperative to rise above partisan narratives and work towards realizing his vision of an equitable society. Present-day Congress leaders should reflect on the historical mistreatment and humiliation of Dr. Ambedkar under their leadership, instead of casting aspersions on our party. The BJP remains committed to the upliftment of marginalized communities, guided by our mission of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas to achieve the ultimate goal of a prosperous and developed India (Vikasit Bharat).

Let us not forget that Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy belongs to the entire nation, transcending political affiliations. Acknowledging and addressing historical truths is vital to ensuring his ideals continue to inspire future generations. (The author is the official spokesperson of the Telangana BJP state unit)
