Viratra Vankal Mata Temple a 900-year-old temple of Mother goddess Vankal situated on a hilltop called Viratra, located in Barmer of Rajasthan.The idol of this temple is so unique that merely seeing it purifies the mind of all negative thoughts and fills the body with positive energy.
Vikramaditya worshipped at the Shaktipeeth of Hinglaj Mata in Balochistan. Pleased with his devotion, the goddess blessed him with success. Vikramaditya requested a blessing from Hinglaj Mata, wishing to always be able to see her. When he asked her to accompany him to Ujjain, the goddess promised to come with him in the form of an idol. She also took a promise from Vikramaditya not to look back while bringing the idol.
However, on the way, Vikramaditya turned around, and a divine voice told him that he had made a mistake. After this, the king placed the idol on a hilltop, and due to the night’s rest, the place was named Viratra. Due to the crooked neck of the goddess, she was named Vankal Mata Viratra and the temple of the Goddess was built on the top of this hill. Devotees had difficulty in climbing this mountain, so on the prayer of the devotees, the idol of Viratra Mata came down and a new temple was built there.
Crows do not fly over the templebecause of a curse on crows, not a single one is ever seen flying over this temple. According to the story told behind this, the crow had spoiled the Prasad of a woman who had come for darshan in the temple. After that the woman died due to falling from the hill. Since then, crows are not seen flying here.
Devotees from different regions of India come here for darshan. Even today, those who are not able to go to Balochistan Hinglaj Mata in Pakistan. Those devotees reach this temple with their wishes and worship the mother.
