Veludayanpattu Shivasubramaniar Temple is a Murugan temple located in the village Veludayanpattu in Neyveli town – Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu. History says that this temple was built around 800 years ago by Chitra Gadava king of Pallava dynasty. Lord Muruga offers his blessings along with Devayanai and Valli and is thus fondly called ‘Valli Deivanai Sametha Shiva Subramania Swamy’.
Veludayanpattu Sri Shiva Subramania Swamy Temple is the home of a unique primary deity Swayambhu Lord Muruga is seen with a bow and seven arrows instead of his regular weapon of ‘Vel’ (divine javelin). This form or appearance of the Tamil god of Lord Murugan is considered to be very rare and peculiar as the Tamil Kadavul is known for his weapon which is ‘Vel Vel Vetri Vel’.
It is believed that Sages and Devas performed penance on Lord Murugan for his divine darshan. Lord Murugan appeared to them in the form of light (Jyothi) and then he gave darshan in the form of Hunter with bows and arrows. Sages built this Temple for Lord Murugan. In due course of time, the temple got dilapidated and lost to sand. During the 13th Century, this area was ruled by Chithrakadavan, a local Pallava chieftain. His cows used to graze the forest area where the temple was present. When the cows returned to the palace, the cows did not milk.
The Astonished King wanted to know the reason by himself. The next day, he followed the cows and was surprised to see them milking automatically near the bush. He instructed his soldiers to clear the bush. During the process, the shovel hit an object, and blood started oozing out. The Shocked King instructed his soldiers to check slowly, and they found the beautiful Muruga Idol.
The Lord instructed the King to build a temple for him in his dreams. The Pious King built the temple for Lord Murugan in this place.
As the temple is currently under administration, it was given the name Villudayan Patti Subramaniar Temple, but the name Veludayan Pattu has remained.
