New Delhi: In a significant move that underscores the importance of Indian cultural values and ethos, President Droupadi Murmu has announced the renaming of two prominent halls within Rashtrapati Bhavan. The historic ‘Durbar Hall’ will now be known as ‘Ganatantra Mandap,’ while ‘Ashok Hall’ will be renamed ‘Ashok Mandap.’
Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence and office of the President of India, symbolizes the nation’s heritage. Efforts are continually made to ensure it mirrors Indian cultural values and becomes more accessible to the public. The Rashtrapati Bhavan issued a statement saying, “Continuous efforts are being made to make it more accessible to people. There has been a consistent endeavour to make the ambience of the Rashtrapati Bhavan reflective of Indian cultural values and ethos.”
President Murmu’s decision aligns with the BJP government’s broader initiative to move away from colonial legacies and better reflect India’s cultural heritage. The new names aim to emphasize the nation’s traditional values. The press release elaborates on the historical and cultural significance behind the renaming.
The term ‘Durbar,’ originally referring to the courts of Indian rulers and the British Raj, lost its relevance after India became a republic. The statement highlighted that ‘Durbar Hall,’ a venue for significant ceremonies like the presentation of National Awards, will now be called ‘Ganatantra Mandap.’ The term ‘Ganatantra,’ meaning republic, resonates deeply with India’s societal values since ancient times, making it a fitting name for the hall.
Regarding ‘Ashok Hall,’ the statement explained its transformation from a ballroom to a symbol of Indian heritage. The name ‘Ashok’ signifies someone free from suffering and sorrow, and it also refers to Emperor Ashoka, a symbol of unity and peaceful coexistence. The National Emblem of India, the lion capital of Ashoka from Sarnath, further emphasizes the significance of the name. Additionally, the Ashok tree holds deep importance in Indian religious traditions, arts, and culture. Renaming ‘Ashok Hall’ to ‘Ashok Mandap’ aligns with the removal of anglicized traces and reinforces the cultural values associated with the name ‘Ashok.’
This renaming marks a step forward in embracing India’s rich cultural heritage and moving away from remnants of the colonial past. The new names, ‘Ganatantra Mandap’ and ‘Ashok Mandap,’ not only honor the nation’s traditional values but also reflect a commitment to preserving and promoting India’s unique cultural identity.
