Kalpattu Shaneeswara Temple, dedicated to the planet Saturn (Shaneeshwara), is located in Kalpattu, Vilupuram district, Tamil Nadu. This unique temple is known for its distinctive idol of Lord Shani and other deities. Lord Shaneeshwara is seen here with the impaired leg.

Brahamananda Swamigal built this 500-year-old Sri Shaneeshwara temple. Pranava Ganapathi at the temple’s entrance was found from a tank here believed to have been worshipped by Desingu Raja. It was obtained while renovating a pond nearby.

The specialty of the temple is Lord Shani’s idol which is 21 feet tall with merciful eyes, wearing black and blue colour clothes, grounding left leg and right leg on the gigantic crow vehicle.

Legend has it that Ravana, the demon king, wished to grant his son Indrajit eternal life. To achieve this, he performed intense penance and obtained control over the planets, including Lord Shani. However, Shani managed to cast his aspect on the child, frustrating Ravana’s plans. In response, Ravana broke Lord Shani’s leg, leaving him lame. As a result, the idol of Lord Shani in this temple has one leg resting on the crow to conceal this disability.
