New Delhi: Jay Shah, former Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), officially assumed the role of International Cricket Council (ICC) Chair on December 1, succeeding Greg Barclay. Shah’s appointment marks a pivotal moment for global cricket as he sets out ambitious plans to expand the sport’s reach and inclusivity.
In his first address, Shah expressed gratitude to ICC Directors and Member Boards, outlining his vision to globalize cricket and support its inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. He also emphasized accelerating the growth of women’s cricket.
“This is an exciting time for the sport as we prepare for LA28 and work to make cricket more inclusive and engaging for fans worldwide,” Shah said. “I look forward to working with the ICC team and member countries to take the sport to new heights.”
Shah’s immediate challenge is resolving the ongoing Champions Trophy venue dispute between the BCCI and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). With India opting for a hybrid model, negotiations for a long-term solution remain critical.
As Shah steps down from his BCCI role, several names, including Arun Dhumal and Devajit Saikia, are being considered for the Secretary position. BCCI President Roger Binny is expected to oversee the transition until a Special General Body Meeting is convened within 45 days to elect Shah’s successor.
Shah’s tenure promises to be a transformative period for cricket, with a focus on innovation and inclusivity at the global stage.
