How to Meditate? Be Stupid!

If you are unable to meditate—if your mind keeps chattering and nothing seems to work—simply feel that you do not know anything. The moment you drop the burden of knowing, you will find yourself sinking deep within.

Your intellect is only a small part of your total consciousness. But when you get trapped there, you miss much of life. Happiness dawns the moment you transcend the intellect.

How do you go beyond it? By being simple. By being a little stupid. Pretend you know nothing. Everyone tries so hard not to appear foolish, not to look dumb—but that, in fact, is real stupidity.

When you allow yourself to be simple, innocent, even a little foolish, you loosen the grip of the intellect. You open the door to meditation. If you stop at that “stupid” state and do not meditate, it can slip into dullness or depression. So after being “stupid,” sit quietly and meditate. You will discover a sense of freshness and joy arising within you.

How do you become stupid? Simply by being yourself—natural, effortless, unguarded.

Even wonder helps you transcend the intellect. When you are filled with wonder, the analytical mind comes to a halt. You look at a flower, a sunset, a child’s smile—and suddenly you are in awe. In that very moment, the spirit within you awakens.

Life is a journey from a frustrated “I don’t know” to a beautiful “I don’t know!” If you feel amazed, astonished, or wonderstruck, gently close your eyes with a smile and stay there. Astonishment is the beginning of one’s spiritual journey.

This creation is full of astonishing things, yet we take them for granted. When wonder disappears, inertia sets in. Tamas—lethargy—increases, and we become inactive and unaware.

A sense of wonder naturally leads you to meditation. Vismaya Yoga Bhumika—the state of astonishment—is the foundation of yoga.

Whenever you feel that spontaneous “Wow!”, know that you are connected to your own spirit. You are already meditating. You are already in yoga.

Isn’t it amazing?
Isn’t it beautiful?
