Cabinet approves opening of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas, over 86,000 students to benefit

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the opening of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), which would benefit over 86,000 students, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

Out of the 57 new KVs, seven will be sponsored by the Union Home Ministry, and the rest by state governments. Twenty of the newly approved KVs are proposed to be opened in districts where no KV presently exist,s despite a significant number of Central Government employees.

“The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved opening of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas under the Civil sector across the country to facilitate the educational needs of the wards of increased number of central government employees,” Vaishnaw said at a press conference.

At present, there are 1,288 Kendriya Vidyalayas in India and abroad (Moscow, Kathmandu and Tehran) with nearly 13.6 lakh students enrolled.

The 57 new schools will be spread across 17 States and Union Territories, with a focus on areas where there is high demand. Out of these, 20 KVs will be set up in districts with no existing KV, 14 in aspirational districts, four in Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, and five in North-East and hilly regions.

Seven of the schools are sponsored by the Ministry of Home Affairs, while the rest are backed by State and UT authorities. This approval follows the sanctioning of 85 new KVs in December 2024, showing the government’s continued push for expansion.

The new schools are expected to benefit over 86,000 students and create around 4,600 permanent jobs for teachers and staff. Construction and related work will also generate employment for skilled and unskilled workers.

With 913 KVs already recognised as PM Shri Schools, this step further strengthens the role of Kendriya Vidyalayas as model schools known for quality teaching, modern facilities, and strong board exam results.
