Three held with Rs 3.98cr in TN, allege BJP candidate directed cash to voters; DMK

Chennai: The ruling DMK has demanded thorough searches across all locations associated with Tirunelveli BJP MLA Nainar Nagendar, following the seizure of Rs 4.5 crores from three individuals. One of the suspects reportedly serves as a manager at the Blue Diamond Hotel in Purasawalkam, owned by the said BJP leader.

RS Bharathi, the DMK organizing secretary, urged Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo to ensure searches at all premises connected to BJP candidates contesting in Tamil Nadu. Bharathi expressed suspicion that Nainar Nagendar might have stashed away crores of rupees for voter bribery, alleging large-scale corrupt practices by him and the BJP.

The demand surfaced after Flying Squad Teams intercepted Rs 3.98 crores from three individuals traveling on an express train bound for Tirunelveli. Tambaram police subsequently detained the trio, identified as Sathish (33), Naveen (26), and Perumal (26), who confessed to carrying the cash for distribution to voters as per Nainar Nagendran’s directives.

Acting on a tip-off, the FST apprehended the suspects at Tambaram Railway Station, seizing five bags containing Rs 3,98,91,500. Further investigation is underway, with three additional individuals implicated in the case.

The recovered funds have been handed over to the Tahsildar, with the Income Tax department notified. Additionally, the Chengalpattu District Electoral Officer confirmed forwarding all relevant details to the Income Tax Department for a thorough inquiry.
