Telangana to Unveil New Life Sciences Policy, Eyes Global MedTech Leadership

Hyderabad: In a bold move to cement its position as a global leader in life sciences and MedTech innovation, the Telangana government is gearing up to unveil a new Life Sciences Policy. The upcoming policy aims to leverage the state’s world-class infrastructure and talent ecosystem to drive cutting-edge advancements in biotechnology, digital health, and AI-led drug discovery.

State IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu revealed the plans during an industry interaction, noting Telangana’s rapid growth and future-ready strategy. “We’re not competing with other states—we’re competing with ourselves,” he said. “With a strategic roadmap in place, our goal is to launch 100 Global Capability Centers (GCCs) by 2025–26.”

Hyderabad, already home to marquee projects like Genome Valley and MedTech Parks, witnessed the launch of 70 GCCs in 2024–25 alone—a national record unmatched by any other state. The new Life Sciences Policy will further integrate emerging domains such as AI in healthcare, digital platforms for clinical trials, and the Telangana Data Exchange, creating a robust ecosystem for innovation.

Telangana has become a magnet for global pharmaceutical and MedTech giants. Companies like Novartis, AstraZeneca, Medtronic, and now Eli Lilly have set up their operations in the state. Eli Lilly’s recent foray is particularly significant, with its GCC expected to focus on AI-driven drug discovery, cloud-based clinical trial platforms, and automated regulatory compliance, setting new benchmarks for the industry.

“We are working with sincerity and vision to make Telangana the MedTech capital of India,” Sridhar Babu asserted. “Eli Lilly’s entry will amplify our global credibility and boost investor confidence.”

The state has leased over 11 million square feet of space for R&D labs, manufacturing units, and MedTech facilities—the highest in the country—demonstrating its commitment to fostering innovation-led growth. More than 300,000 STEM graduates emerge annually from Telangana’s universities and colleges, providing a deep and steady talent pipeline for industries.

The minister also extended a heartfelt invitation to national and international investors to join the state’s MedTech revolution. “We welcome all stakeholders to become partners in the journey of a ‘Rising Telangana,’” he said.

As the global life sciences landscape continues to evolve, Telangana appears poised to lead from the front—with policy clarity, infrastructure readiness, and a vision-driven approach that puts science and innovation at its core.
