New King ascends world chess throne

Sheer perseverance!!! That’s what 18-year-old Dommaraju Gukesh exhibited to the hilt to ascend the world chess championship throne, becoming the youngest ever to achieve this amazing distinction.  This has triggered a cascade of accolades and epitaphs on this Indian youngster. Gukesh who was born in Andhra Pradesh. Gukesh won Thursday’s game with the black pieces after Ding wilted under pressure and blundered in what commentators considered to be a comfortable position, snatching the title with a final score of 7.5-6.5. With the endgame dragging out into the fifth hour, Ding made a blunder which cost him the game, the match, and the crown.

While there was a mountain of appreciation, the Russian Chess Federation president has asked the world body to investigate why and how fancied Ding faltered. “The result of the last game caused bewilderment among professionals and chess fans. The actions of the Chinese chess player in the decisive segment are extremely suspicious and require a separate investigation by FIDE. Losing the position in which Ding Liren was is difficult even for a first-class player. The defeat of the Chinese chess player in today’s game raises a lot of questions and looks like a deliberate one.”

Former world champion Gary Kasparov lauded Indian grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju, who defeated defending champion Ding Liren to become the youngest world chess champion in the game’s history. 18-year-old Gukesh surpassed Russian great Garry Kasparov, who won the crown in 1985 at 22.

Former World Champion Magnus Carlsen says Gukesh was impressive and he deserved to be the World Chess Champion.  Former World Champion Magnus Carlsen, who relinquished his title in 2022, citing lack of motivation, has confirmed that he won’t be challenging Gukesh in the future.  There was however a different and scathing statement that came from the former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik who said:  after the 18-year-old Gukesh pipped holder Ding Liren in Game 14 of the World Chess Championship to become the youngest world champion in history. Kamnik called it an “End of chess,” after Gukesh won the championship in Game 14.

Gukesh announced his arrival when India won the chess Olympiad. His calm assurance sheer intelligence and perfect understanding of every move in the book have helped him reach this pinnacle of glory.
