Kavitha Demands Stronger BC Reservations

Hyderabad: BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha has urged the Telangana government to introduce three separate bills to strengthen reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in education, employment, and local body elections.

“The government acknowledges that BCs make up 46% of the state’s population. If they are committed to social justice, they must act by bringing distinct bills—one for education, one for employment, and one for political representation in local bodies,” Kavitha stated.

Highlighting the legal feasibility of her demand, the former Nizamabad MP emphasized that while reservations in education and employment face legal constraints, local body reservations fall entirely under state jurisdiction as per Article 243G of the Indian Constitution. “There are no legal hurdles in implementing political reservations for BCs. If this government truly supports backward-class empowerment, they must take decisive action,” she asserted.

On the recent MLC elections, Kavitha criticized national parties for failing to field BC candidates. “This election did not reflect true democracy. No party gave a ticket to a BC candidate, and the BRS did not contest. However, when we called for BC unity, a BC candidate emerged and gave tough competition. Had national parties genuinely supported BC representation, the results would have been different,” she remarked.

In a separate statement, Kavitha expressed deep condolences over the tragic killing of a Telangana citizen in the United States. “It is heartbreaking. I urge the Telangana government and the Centre to ensure the victim’s body is brought home swiftly. My prayers are with the grieving family. I also extend my support to Indian students in the U.S. who may feel vulnerable after this incident—stay strong, the Indian Embassy and government will stand by you,” she said.
