Vijayawada: In a major push towards India’s climate goals, the International Solar Alliance (ISA) has called for a comprehensive strategy to implement Mission LIFE (Lifestyle for Environment). This initiative, championed by India, aims to inspire communities to adopt sustainable practices, contributing to the nation’s goal of reducing carbon emissions by one billion tons by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General of ISA, emphasized integrating energy efficiency into the Mission LIFE strategy. During discussions in Delhi with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), he highlighted the need for proactive state-level engagement and the widespread adoption of energy-efficient technologies. He noted that public participation is crucial to the success of these programs.
The meeting, attended by BEE’s Media Advisor for Southern States, recognized the impressive milestones achieved by BEE and other stakeholders in the past fiscal year. Notably, BEE’s efforts saved 306 billion kWh of electricity and 24.68 million tons of oil equivalent (MTOE) in thermal energy, resulting in substantial economic gains.
Under the Perform, Achieve & Trade (PAT) scheme, BEE reported significant energy savings, with reductions of 8.67 MTOE and 31 million tons of CO2 in PAT Cycle I, and even greater success in Cycle II with 14.08 MTOE and 68.43 million tons of CO2 reductions.
Andhra Pradesh was spotlighted as a leader in energy efficiency, with targets set to save 6.68 MTOE by 2030. The state’s Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, has actively promoted sustainable practices, reviewing energy efficiency roadmaps and supporting large-scale renewable projects.
Dr. Mathur commended the state’s adoption of national initiatives like UJALA and E-Mobility, and praised its new Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) policy for 2024. He noted that efforts by states like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are vital to India’s climate action, which could potentially cut global emissions by up to 20% if adopted widely.
