New Delhi: The opposition INDIA bloc celebrated on Saturday after winning 7 out of 13 Assembly seats contested across seven states. This notable achievement follows the bloc’s strong challenge to the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls.
The BJP secured only one seat, while an independent candidate also won one seat as the votes were counted on Saturday.
Parties from the INDIA bloc, including Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), AAP, and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), fielded candidates in the Wednesday bypolls.
In Punjab, AAP’s Mohinder Bhagat won the Jalandhar West seat, defeating BJP nominee Sheetal Angural by 37,325 votes, according to the Election Commission (EC). The seat was previously held by Angural, who resigned from AAP and joined BJP in March.
In Himachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife, Kamlesh Thakur, a Congress candidate, won in Dehra. TMC’s Krishna Kalyani secured a victory in West Bengal’s Raiganj.
The Congress party achieved significant victories in Uttarakhand, winning both Badrinath and Manglaur assembly seats. The results were met with enthusiastic celebrations by Congress workers.
In Tamil Nadu, DMK’s Anniyur Siva led by 39,435 votes in the Vikravandi assembly seat over PMK’s Anbumani C, as per the EC website.
TMC’s Kalyani defeated BJP’s Manas Kumar Ghosh by 50,077 votes to win the Raiganj assembly seat. TMC candidates Mukut Nami Adhikari, Madhuparna Thakur, and Supti Pandey led in Ranaghat Dakshin, Bagda, and Maniktala, respectively.
In Ranaghat Dakshin, Bagda, and Maniktala, BJP trailed by 31,737, 33,455, and 34,865 votes, respectively.
In Himachal Pradesh, Kamlesh Thakur defeated BJP’s Hoshiyar Singh by 9,399 votes in Dehra. In the other two bypoll seats in the state, Congress’ Hardeep Singh Bawa led in Nalagarh, and BJP’s Ashish Sharma led in Hamirpur. In Hamirpur, Congress’ Pushpinder Verma trailed Sharma by 1,571 votes, while Bawa led by 8,990 votes over BJP’s K L Thakur in Nalagarh.
In Madhya Pradesh’s Amarwar seat, Congress’ Dheeran Shah Invati led BJP’s Kamslesh Pratap Shahi by 2,069 votes. In Bihar, JD(U)’s Kaladhar Prasad Mandal trailed Independent candidate Shankar Singh by 5,069 votes, according to the EC website
