General Budget on Sunday February 1: LS Speaker Om Birla

New Delhi:  In a first, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the general budget in Parliament on Sunday, February 1, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced on Monday.

This will be Sitharaman’s ninth budget presentation, one short of the record 10 budgets presented by the then finance minister Morarji Desai.

The Budget session of Parliament begins on January 28 with President Droupadi Murmu addressing the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha members assembled in the Lok Sabha chamber.

Sharing the decision on social media, Rijiju said, “On the recommendation of the Govt of India, Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji has approved the summoning of both the Houses of Parliament for the Budget Session 2026. The Session will commence on 28 January 2026 and continue till 2 April 2026.” He added that the first phase of the session will conclude on February 13, while the second phase will begin on March 9. The Union Budget is likely to be tabled on February 1, which falls on a Sunday this year.

The Budget Session is the first parliamentary session held each calendar year. It begins with the President’s address to a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, after which legislative and financial business is taken up. The Budget Session is followed by the Monsoon Session in July–August and the Winter Session in November–December.
