EPDCL Launches Major Sustainability Push Aligned with Mission LIFE

Visakhapatnam/Vijayawada: In a strong show of support for Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s commitment to sustainable development, the Eastern Power Distribution Company Ltd. (EPDCL) has launched a comprehensive set of initiatives aligned with the Union Government’s Mission LIFE. Headquartered in Visakhapatnam, EPDCL’s initiatives will promote eco-friendly practices across its extensive network, spanning Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, East Godavari, and West Godavari districts. This initiative is aimed at advancing energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and encouraging environmental conservation across Andhra Pradesh.

In line with Mission LIFE’s principles, EPDCL’s sustainable efforts will focus on reducing waste, conserving water, adopting renewable energy sources, and promoting energy-efficient appliances certified by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). The company is committed to a consumer-first approach, inspiring communities to adopt sustainable choices that contribute to environmental preservation and economic growth. Prudhvi Tej, Chairman and Managing Director of EPDCL, noted the critical role that consumers play in fostering a greener future. “By empowering consumers to make sustainable choices, we will contribute to a cleaner, greener future while enhancing the economic vitality of EPDCL,” he said.

The launch of Mission LIFE was marked by a promotional poster, designed by BEE’s Media Adviser Wing for Southern States and Union Territories, unveiled in a ceremony attended by key officials. These included Praveen Gupta from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Milind Deora, Secretary of BEE, and senior state power sector officials, reflecting a strong multi-agency partnership to support the mission’s goals.

EPDCL’s efforts are bolstered by the ongoing guidance of Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar, and Special Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand, along with financial and technical backing from BEE. The government’s support, alongside consumer collaboration, is anticipated to drive significant progress in energy conservation, expand renewable energy use, and deliver high-quality power supply to households.

Milind Deora commended Andhra Pradesh’s leadership in embracing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for sustainable development. He highlighted the state’s commitment to advancing energy efficiency and renewable energy, particularly through Mission LIFE, which aims to foster eco-friendly habits at scale. EPDCL and BEE also plan to promote Mission LIFE at renowned pilgrimage sites like Tirupati, showcasing Andhra Pradesh’s dedication to sustainable practices and setting a benchmark for environmental stewardship.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s Standards & Labeling (S&L) Program, which certifies energy-efficient appliances, has achieved remarkable progress in recent years. The S&L Program covered 35 energy-efficient appliances as of January 2024, resulting in energy savings of 81.64 billion units, translating to financial savings of Rs 54,324 crores and reducing CO2 emissions by 58 million tonnes in 2022-23 alone. This successful implementation underscores the potential for such programs to make a tangible impact on energy conservation nationwide.

Recognized as one of India’s leading power distribution companies, EPDCL is also prioritizing consumer engagement through innovative communication strategies in partnership with the Ministry of Power, BEE, and the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM). By integrating Mission LIFE into its long-term strategies, EPDCL aims to generate green jobs, boost eco-friendly technologies, and promote sustainable practices that support local communities and entrepreneurs.

With Mission LIFE outlining 75 actionable steps, including the promotion of LED bulbs, public transport, electric vehicles, carpooling, and solar solutions, EPDCL’s initiatives are poised to yield far-reaching environmental and economic benefits. As Andhra Pradesh leads the way in sustainable energy solutions, EPDCL’s mission-driven approach is set to create a cleaner, greener state for generations to come.
