Chennai: The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next three hours, the Regional Meteorological Centre confirmed on Friday. The storm is expected to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, near Puducherry, on Saturday afternoon.
S. Balachandran, head of the centre, shared that earlier projections indicated a weakened system. However, updated forecasts now predict a more powerful storm. As of 5:30 a.m., the weather system was approximately 310 km east of Nagapattinam, 360 km east-southeast of Puducherry, and 400 km southeast of Chennai.
The cyclone is expected to bring wind speeds of 75-80 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 90 kmph, alongside heavy rainfall in several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall in coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and nearby regions from November 29 to December 1. Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, and Puducherry are expected to face significant downpours, raising concerns about localized flooding.
Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea, while residents in coastal areas are urged to stay vigilant. Authorities warn of potential damage to infrastructure, crops, and transportation, with the risk of uprooted trees, structural damage, and power outages.
In response, the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments have activated disaster management protocols. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is on standby, and local agencies are coordinating efforts to ensure preparedness. Relief centres have been set up, and emergency supplies, including boats, food, and medical aid, are being pre-positioned in vulnerable areas.
Residents are advised to secure their homes, avoid non-essential travel, and follow updates from local authorities. Those in low-lying areas should prepare for possible evacuations and prioritize safety as the storm approaches.
