Pune: In a tragic incident on Sunday afternoon, a pedestrian bridge built for tourists over the Indrayani River collapsed in the Kundmala area of Dehu in Pune district, sweeping several people into the river’s strong current. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 PM, triggered panic among onlookers as many individuals were on the bridge when it gave way.
The bridge, located in the pilgrimage town of Dehu—closely linked to Sant Tukaram—was a popular spot for tourists and devotees. Being a Sunday, a large number of visitors had gathered in the area. According to eyewitnesses, the bridge collapsed suddenly, giving no time for those on it to react. The strong current of the Indrayani River carried away several individuals.
Local MLA Sunil Shelke, who was present at the site, stated that nearly 100 tourists were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Initial estimates suggest that 20 to 25 people may have been swept away.
Preliminary reports indicate that the bridge was in a dilapidated condition, raising concerns over its structural integrity. Witnesses claimed that a few motorcycles were on the bridge at the time, and the excess weight may have caused a section of the bridge to give way.
Rescue efforts were launched immediately by the Talegaon Dabhade Police under the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate. Teams from the local police, fire brigade, and divers were rushed to the scene.
Two teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed and are assisting with the search operation. As of now, 5 to 7 individuals have been rescued, while search efforts continue for those still missing.
Approximately 10 to 12 ambulances have been stationed at the site to provide emergency medical assistance.
NCP MP Supriya Sule reacted to the incident on social media and wrote, “A bridge over the Indrayani river collapsed at Kundmala in Maval taluka of Pune district. It is feared that some citizens on the bridge may have been swept away. This incident is very unfortunate, and I pray to God that all these citizens are safe. I have spoken to the District Collector, Pune, regarding this incident, and he is sending all necessary help. My humble request to the citizens is that please take necessary precautions while going for monsoon tourism. Follow the safety rules strictly.”
As rescue operations continue into the evening, the exact number of casualties or missing persons remains unclear. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation and regular updates as the situation develops.
