BJP-led NDA set to sweep Assam polls

Guwahati: The BJP-led NDA is set to steamroll Congress in the upcoming Assam elections and may retain power with a stronger mandate than in 2021, according to the latest Vote Tracker opinion poll by VoteVibe.

BJP set to win 87-97 of the 126 in the state assembly. Congress may get just 26-36 seats. In 2021, NDA had won 75 seats in the state, with BJP winning 60 on its own.

An earlier opinion survey by VoteVibe, released on March 23, had projected 80-90 seats for BJP-led NDA, which have since been revised upwards.

In terms of vote share, the survey has predicted 44% vote share for the BJP-led NDA and 36.7% vote share for the Congress-led opposition.

Almost half (47%) of the respondents said that they want to see incumbent Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to retain the top post after the next round of Assembly polls in the state. Nearly 35% of the respondents said Assam Pradesh Congress president Gaurav Gogoi is their second choice for the chief minister.

The crucial northeastern state of Assam will vote in a single phase on April 9 to elect 126 legislators.

Unemployment, corruption, and fair investigation of the late singer Zubeen Garg’s death were the top issues in this election, according to the respondents.

Meanwhile, nearly 30% respondents said that India has performed very well in securing India’s energy security during the ongoing war conflict in the Middle East. Similarly, 29% respondents said India’s diplomacy during the Iran-US war has been very good. Additionally, 33% respondents said that voting consideration on April 9 will be dictated by the work done by the state government.
