Dehradun: The fifth day of the Doon Book Festival offered an engaging and inspiring experience for young readers, with astronaut and Indian Air Force fighter pilot Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla taking centre stage in a special interactive session.
Shukla captivated students with vivid accounts of his space journey, complemented by videos that provided a glimpse into life beyond Earth. His simple yet motivating responses to a wide range of questions—from space exploration to his personal journey—left the audience both informed and inspired.
In another highlight of the day, a session titled “Leadership in Uniform: Stories of Courage, Restraint, and Resolve” featured Lieutenant General Satish Dua in conversation with senior journalist Neeraj Rajput. The discussion delved into the nuances of leadership, discipline, and the evolving challenges of modern military operations. Both speakers emphasised the importance of restraint and resolve in navigating complex security scenarios.
The Children’s Corner remained a hub of activity, drawing participation from over 1,500 students. Activities ranged from a “Dance and Body Movement Workshop” to a “Draw a Mascot” session, where children explored creative expression while learning about Rashtriya-e-Pustakalaya. A “Puppet Making Workshop” further encouraged hands-on learning, while the day concluded with a “Teacher to Facilitator” session focused on participatory teaching methods for educators and parents. Continuous engagement was ensured through attractions like the Aipan Art Corner and Color Me Corner.

The festival also saw a visit from former Uttarakhand Chief Minister and Haridwar MP Trivendra Singh Rawat, who toured the bookstalls and honoured Group Captain Shukla with a book. Addressing attendees, Rawat underscored the importance of literature, stating that books play a crucial role in shaping thought and personality while connecting youth with diverse fields of knowledge.
The day concluded on a cultural note with a performance by the ‘Colors of India’ band, whose blend of folk, classical, and fusion music enthralled the audience.
The festival will continue on April 9 with a range of events, including storytelling sessions, creative workshops, and literary discussions. Notable sessions include a discussion by Chandrachur Ghose and Anuj Dhar on the life and mysteries of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, and a presentation by Sanjeev Chopra on India’s history through literature. The day will culminate with a cultural performance by renowned Uttarakhand folk singer Priyanka Meher.
