The origins of the Velayuthaswamy Kanakagiri Temple trace back to the 18th century. According to local legends, the ruler of Kanakagiri, King Sakshi Mala, experienced a divine vision in which Lord Murugan instructed him to establish a temple at this location. Heeding the divine command, the king constructed the temple, which has since become a significant place of worship and pilgrimage.
The name “Kanagagiri” is derived from the words “Kanaka” (gold) and “Giri” (hill), indicating the area’s historical association with gold mining. Local tradition holds that gold from this region contributed to the golden roof of the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, reflecting the area’s ancient prosperity.

According to legend, during the 18th century, King Sakshi Mala experienced a divine vision where Lord Murugan instructed him to build a temple on this hill. The king followed the vision, constructing the temple that has grown into a prominent pilgrimage site.
The saint-poet Arunagirinathar is believed to have visited Kanagagiri and composed hymns in praise of Lord Murugan here. The temple is recognized as a Thiruppugazh sthalam, where the saint’s devotional songs were sung, highlighting its spiritual and cultural significance. Over the years, the temple has been renovated and expanded, preserving its sacred ambiance and Dravidian architectural beauty.
