Sri Pethatchi Vinayakar Temple is located in the heart of Theni town, Tamil Nadu. The main deity of this temple is Lord Ganesha, worshipped here as Sri Pethachchey Vinayakar. He is considered the remover of obstacles and the giver of wisdom, success, and prosperity. Devotees believe that praying at this temple brings peace of mind, blessings for new beginnings, and relief from problems. The idol of Pethatchi Vinayakar has a graceful appearance and is decorated daily with flowers and ornaments.
The temple follows traditional South Indian architecture, with a simple yet elegant structure. The sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) houses the main idol of Lord Ganesha. The temple has a clean courtyard, and the entrance is marked with a small gopuram (tower). Inside the premises, traditional elements like deepam holders, bells, and arches add to the temple’s spiritual charm.
A long time ago, in the town of Theni, there was a sacred banyan tree near the current location of the temple. Beneath this tree, a small, self-manifested (swayambhu) idol of Lord Ganesha, known as Kannimoola Ganapati, was discovered. A deeply devoted lady named Pethatchi Amma used to visit this spot every day to perform abhishekam (holy bath) and pooja for Lord Vinayaka with great devotion.
One day, the small idol mysteriously disappeared. The local people searched for it but couldn’t find it. After some days, the idol reappeared at the same spot under the tree. This happened more than once, and people realized that this was no ordinary stone—it was Lord Vinayaka himself who wished to remain there and bless devotees.
The people then decided to build a small temple around the spot. Over time, a bigger idol of Lord Ganesha was installed next to the original swayambhu Ganapati. Because of the devotion and service of Pethatchi Amma, the deity came to be lovingly called Sri Pethatchi Vinayakar.
Even today, both the original self-manifested Ganapati and the larger Pethachchi Vinayakar idol are worshipped in the temple. It is believed that Lord Ganesha chose to stay here because of his followers’ deep devotion, and he continues to bless devotees who come with faith and sincerity.
The temple celebrates major festivals like Vinayaka Chaturthi and Sankatahara Chaturthi with special abhishekams, decorations, and offerings. Devotees gather in large numbers during these occasions to offer prayers and seek blessings. Other important observances include Margazhi and Aadi month rituals, early morning bhajans, and Pradosham. Regular homams and group prayers are conducted for students, career success, and well-being.
