Shah to Move Resolution for Extension of President’s Rule in Manipur

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to move a resolution in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday seeking a six-month extension of President’s Rule in Manipur, effective from August 13.

According to a parliamentary bulletin, the House will be asked to approve the continuance of the Proclamation issued on February 13, 2025, under Article 356 of the Constitution.

Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9, just a day before facing a no-confidence motion and floor test in the Assembly. His resignation came in the backdrop of relentless ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023.

Despite pressure from civil society groups and 21 NDA MLAs urging the Centre to restore a “popular government,” no consensus has emerged on Singh’s successor. The MLAs, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah in April, expressed concern over the lack of visible efforts to restore peace and warned of a possible resurgence of violence.

The ongoing ethnic conflict has claimed over 250 lives and displaced nearly 60,000 people, many of whom remain in relief camps.
