Rescue Efforts in Full Swing as Six Workers Trapped in Telangana Tunnel Collapse

Hyderabad: A large-scale rescue operation is underway after a section of an under-construction tunnel collapsed in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool district, trapping at least six workers inside. The tunnel, part of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) project, suffered a partial collapse on Saturday, prompting an immediate response from authorities.

Officials reported that the incident took place around 12 to 13 kilometers inside the tunnel while workers were engaged in routine construction work. As news of the collapse broke, rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), were swiftly mobilized to the site. Specialized equipment and manpower are being deployed to ensure the safe evacuation of those trapped.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep concern over the accident and immediately directed senior officials to oversee rescue efforts. In a statement, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed that key officials, including the District Collector, Superintendent of Police, and Fire Department personnel, had been instructed to reach the site without delay. Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with senior irrigation officials, departed for the accident site via a special helicopter to monitor the situation closely.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reached out to Chief Minister Reddy, offering full support in the ongoing rescue operations. “The government is doing everything possible to save the trapped workers. All necessary resources have been mobilized to expedite the operation,” the CMO stated.

Rescue teams are facing challenges due to the tunnel’s depth and structural instability. However, efforts are progressing with advanced machinery and manual excavation to clear debris safely. Medical teams are on standby to provide immediate assistance to rescued workers.

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy has also expressed concern, urging authorities to ensure the best medical care for the injured. “All efforts should be made to bring the trapped workers to safety as soon as possible,” he stated.

Authorities remain optimistic as the rescue operation continues around the clock. Officials have assured that safety protocols are being followed to prevent further risks during the evacuation process.

While the focus remains on saving lives, the incident has also sparked discussions about construction safety standards. For now, the government and rescue teams are prioritizing the safe retrieval of the workers, with hopes for a positive outcome.
