New Delhi: Senior Supreme Court advocate and former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader H S Phoolka joined the BJP on Wednesday.
Phoolka, who is best known for representing 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims in their quest for justice, joined AAP in 2014 and quit it five years later in 2019.
Phoolka contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as an AAP candidate from Ludhiana in Punjab but lost to Congress’s Ravneet Singh Bittu, now a BJP leader and a Union minister.
Phoolka first entered politics in 2014 with the AAP, contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Ludhiana. He later won the Dakha seat in the 2017 Punjab assembly elections and briefly served as the leader of opposition in the state.
However, he stepped back from active political duties in 2017, resigning his post to ensure his legal work for the riot victims remained uncompromised. He eventually resigned as an MLA in 2018 and quit the AAP in early 2019 to focus entirely on judicial causes.
His decision to join the BJP provides the party with a credible Sikh face in Punjab, drawing on his reputation for professional integrity and lifelong commitment to the 1984 victims.
