Kerala blasts: Toll rises to 3 as another succumbs to wounds

Kochi: The death toll from the blasts at a Christian religious gathering near this port city of Kerala has risen to three, according to an official statement.

A 12-year-old girl, identified as Libina from Malayattoor in Ernakulam district, succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of Monday at the Kalamassery Government Medical College Hospital.

In the statement issued by the hospital’s medical board, the girl was admitted to the hospital on Sunday morning with severe burns covering 95 per cent of her body.

She had sustained 80 per cent burn injuries in the blaze that broke out on the first floor of the eight- storey residential building, ‘Veena Santoor’, on Monday (October 23).

Five people were injured in the fire and two of them, a 43-year-old woman, Glory Walphati, and a boy, Josu Gems Robert (8), were declared “brought dead ” when they were taken to civic-run Shatabdi Hospital on the day of the incident.

The civic official said a 42-year-old woman, Lakshmi Bura, who had sustained 47 per cent burn injuries, is undergoing treatment and her condition is “critical but stable”.
He said another injured woman was discharged from hospital against medical advice.
