Former CJI NV Ramana to be Appointed as New TTD Chairman

Amaravati: In a significant development, the Nara Chandrababu Naidu-led Jana Sena Party (JSP)-BJP government is reportedly set to appoint former Chief Justice of India (CJI), NV Ramana, as the new Chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the governing body of one of the wealthiest and most revered temples in the world. This decision comes amidst rising concerns among devotees, particularly following the controversy over the alleged adulteration of the famed Tirumala Srivari Laddu during the tenure of the previous government led by YS Jaganmohan Reddy.

Sources within the Naidu government suggest that the decision is nearly finalized, with an official announcement expected either today or tomorrow. The appointment of NV Ramana, known for his unblemished tenure as the country’s top judge, is seen as a move to restore confidence and uphold the sanctity of the Tirumala temple.

Despite not being regarded as a “great legal mind” by some of his critics, NV Ramana’s term as CJI was free of controversy. His ability to remain non-controversial in an era where several of his predecessors faced turbulent times and accusations of political bias is considered a major achievement. Unlike some former judges who accepted prominent government positions post-retirement, Ramana’s straightforward and unassuming demeanor has earned him respect across the board.

Supporters and observers alike see his potential elevation to TTD Chairman as a positive move by the TDP-led coalition. They believe that placing a respected, non-political figure at the helm of the temple’s administration could set a precedent for future appointments, ensuring that the institution remains dedicated to its spiritual and religious duties, free from political interference.

Ramana, a devout Hindu and follower of Lord Venkateswara, is expected to uphold the temple’s traditional values and ensure that rituals are performed strictly in line with ‘Agamasastra,’ the ancient scriptures guiding temple practices. His appointment would mark the first time in TTD’s history that a former Chief Justice, with no political background, is entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of one of the most sacred temples in India.

This development is being widely regarded as a step in the right direction, especially given the temple’s historical and cultural significance.
