Cauvery Aarti controversy: Karnataka High Court refuses to halt programme

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday refused to stop the proposed Cauvery Aarti programme at Sankey Tank scheduled on March 21.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice KV Aravind disposed of the application filed in this regard after attaining assurance by the state government, BWSSB, and BBMP that there would be no commercial activity.

It was further assured that no activity would be conducted in violation of the provisions under the Karnataka Tank Conservation and Development Authority Act.

The Interlocutory Application (IA) in this regard was moved by Geetha Misra, one of the petitioners in a batch of PILs about the issues concerning the encroachment of lakes in Bengaluru City.

The applicant claimed several constructions, both temporary and permanent, for the event in the Sankey Tank’s buffer zone.

Appearing for the state government, Advocate General K Shashikiran Shetty said that there is no such construction within the tank area.

He further said that the Cauvery Aarti programme is only aimed at creating awareness about preservation of water and also assured the court that there will be no violation of the statute.
